France conducts first attack simulations on satellites in Europe
France conducted exercises to repel hostile attacks on satellites. In a four-day military exercises named AsterX, participants played out a scenario in which an unnamed space-capable power attempted to take out a French communications satellite. The exercise took place at the France's national space agency CNES in Toulouse with the participation of representatives from Italy, Germany and the United States.
AsterX is the first such exercise in France in particular and in Europe in general. They provided specialists with the ability to simulate modifying the flight path of satellites, sending backup satellites to fix a breakdown, monitoring the transmission of sensitive data and encrypting communications of hostile satellites temporarily or even shutting them down completely.
