Mercedes-Benz reports a data breach of 1.6 million customers

Mercedes-Benz has disclosed a data breach impacting some of its customers. The incident affects 1.6 million records, which included customer names, addresses, emails, phone numbers and some purchased vehicle information.

The incident reportedly happened on June 11, 2021 due to unsecured cloud storage. According to the company, the breach affects some customers and potential vehicle buyers who had entered sensitive information on Mercedez-Benz company websites between January 1, 2014 and June 19, 2017.

The investigation of the incident is still ongoing, but it is already known that among the exposed information were such important data as:

• customer credit scores;

• driver license numbers;

• social security numbers;

• credit card numbers;

• dates of birth.

The company has stated that this information would not have been searchable on or indexed by the search engine: “to view the information, one would need knowledge of special software programs and tools. An Internet search would not return any information contained in these files.”

Despite the fact that the total of 1.6 million records are affected by the breach, according to Mercedes-Benz, only about 1,000 customers entered their "additional" personal information, which was available in the mentioned cloud storage.

All victims have now been notified of the incident.
