Microsoft services crash caused by DDoS attack on DNS
Microsoft representatives explained the reasons for the recent failure of a number of cloud services of the tech giant. The outage, which lasted approximately two hours, was caused by an "anomalous surge" in DNS queries from across the globe targeting a set of domains hosted on Azure, as a result of a DDoS attack.
Last week, Microsoft users were unable to access a number of cloud services such as Xbox Live, Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Intune, Dynamics 365, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Exchange Online, OneDrive, Yammer, Power BI., Power Apps , OneNote, Microsoft Managed Desktop, and Microsoft Streams.
According to the company, due to the overload of DNS services, clients began to frequent retries of their requests, thereby exacerbating the problem. The attempts were legitimate and were not dropped by the volumetric spike mitigation system.
Microsoft representatives apologized for the inconvenience and reported that the problem had been fixed.
